What Is Multi-Haul Driving? How This Transport Method Maximizes Efficiency and Earnings

Multi-haul driving is a great career opportunity for those who love to drive and like to set their own hours. The flexible scheduling options and competitive compensation make this a worthwhile choice, especially when it comes to maximizing your earning potential. Below is everything you should know about multi-haul driving, and how this transport method maximizes efficiency and earnings.

First, What is Multi-Haul Driving?

Multi-haul driving is an efficient and profitable transport solution. It involves using a trailer to haul multiple units at one time. With Classic Transport, this is typically hauling two or more RVs to a single destination. There are also opportunities for reloads which removes the chance of dead loads and wasted miles.

Maximizing Earnings and Efficiency

As you are moving multiple units at once, the compensation amount is higher than standard long-haul trips. Compensation is always competitive and is based on the distance between the origin and destination. Drivers will pay for fuel, but 50% of the compensation is paid upfront to cover this cost. Once the units are delivered to the destination, there will often be opportunities for a reload, allowing you to bring units back to the original dispatch zone or another location. The reload compensation follows the same rules, with 50% paid upfront to cover costs during the journey.

As you have the opportunity to reload with new units, you are not wasting any fuel, or putting unnecessary wear on your vehicle. This is why multi-haul driving is such a good career option for long haul drivers.

Common Multi-Haul Questions

Is a Vehicle Required?

Multi-haul drivers must provide their own vehicle, capable of towing the required trailer and units. This is a minimum 1-ton truck that is less than 10 years old and passes the inspection requirements. Older trucks may be considered depending on condition and an inspection. Trucks must have a vertically adjustable Class 4 or better load-levelling hitch and receiver, or a fifth wheel rated at a minimum of 15,000lbs. Windows must be free of cracks, and untinted while mud flaps must have no more than 4” of ground clearance.

What Equipment is Necessary?

All drivers must also carry safety equipment and tools to comply with state and federal DOT regulations. This includes:

  • A fire extinguisher
  • 12-volt breakaway battery
  • Set of triangles and/or flares
  • Tire gauge, lug wrench, and jack
  • Spare fuses
  • Trailer brake control
  • Extendable mirrors for 102” wide trailers

Where Do I Sleep?

The RV units are locked during transport, so many drivers opt to sleep in their vehicles or take advantage of the hotel discounts available. As a multi-haul driver for Classic Transport, you will have access to discounts at many hotels across the US, making your journey easier.

Can I Choose My Schedule?

As with all long-haul driving options, multi-haul drivers have the ability to choose which routes to take. This allows for great flexibility and work-life balance. Additionally, seasonal workers can choose to only work during times that work for them.

What Documents Do I Need?

All drivers must be able to provide the following documents before beginning work.

  • Valid drivers license
  • Social security card
  • Current truck registration
  • Proof of vehicle insurance with minimum $500,000 unladen liability coverage

Sustainability Benefits for Suppliers

While there are many benefits for drivers, there are also numerous sustainability benefits for suppliers. After all, reducing the impact on the environment is beneficial for all involved. Multi-haul transport allows suppliers to save money, and reduce carbon emissions on each delivery. This can also reduce transport time and ensure that customers get their RVs sooner than through other transport methods.

Multi-haul driving is one of the most efficient and profitable ways to earn money as a long-haul driver. Keep the information above in mind as you consider this career.
