Planning Your First Long Haul Trip

On the Road Your Way: Choosing a Driveaway vs. Towaway Program with Classic Transport

Choosing the right way to ship goods as a business can be a struggle, as can choosing what type of driving career you want. With Classic Transport, shipping RVs and bulk products has never been easier. Below, we look at the driveaway and towaway programs offered and how they work for both drivers and businesses.

Driveaway for Businesses

For businesses, driveaway services are where a contractor moves the unit as is. This means that the RV, motorhome, or utility truck is driven to the final location by a driver. Businesses provide the vehicle and can request a delivery date. Note that certain RVs such as motorhomes will be driven, so miles will be added to the vehicles. Drivers will not sleep, eat, or use the bathroom in these units, so the inside will remain pristine. However, there will be wear on the vehicle, especially depending on the distance.

Driveaway for Drivers

To work as a driveaway driver for Classic Transport, you need to have the right qualifications and attend a two-day orientation session. As a driveaway driver, you do not need to provide a vehicle, unless you wish to tow a small car behind the vehicle being moved. This can be helpful as driveaway trips are one-way, meaning you must find your own transport back.

Towaway for Businesses

For businesses, towaway driving means that a driver, with their own truck, will tow your trailer, RV, or motorhome to its final location. In this case, businesses can provide a trailer loaded with their product. For motorhomes and RVS, these will be towed or a trailer, which means that miles are not added to the vehicle. Therefore, they are delivered in pristine, factory condition. Towaway services allow for safe and reliable transportation of goods and vehicles in new condition.

Towaway for Drivers

As a towaway driver for Classic Transport, you will need to use your own ¾ ton or 1-ton truck to deliver the customers’ trailers to the final destination. Towaway contracts have the opportunity for backhaul loads, making them a more profitable option over driveaway contracts. However, towaway drivers should consider the wear and tear on their vehicle.

Driver Requirements

All drivers for Classic Transport, whether in the towaway or driveaway division, must meet the following requirements.

Be at least 23 years old, and have at least 18 months of truck driving experience. Have a maximum of two moving violations and two or fewer accidents within the past three years. Must also have had no suspensions in the past three years and no major violations such as DUIs within the past seven years. Drivers are required to pass a DOT physical exam and drug screening, as well as a road test if they are not a current CDL driver.

For those in the towaway division, their vehicle must also meet the necessary requirements. This includes the vehicle being less than ten years old, with a Class 4 or better load leveling hitch and receiver. Another hitch option is a fifth wheel hitch rated to 15,000lbs. All vehicles must have an emergency kit with flares, a toolkit, a safety chain, fuses, and more. For the full list of vehicle requirements, check the Classic Transport website.

How it Works for Drivers

Drivers for Classic Transport, in any division, get paid half of the compensation per trip up front. This is to help cover costs during the journey, such as gas, food, and any accommodation. All drivers for Classic Transport have access to gas and accommodation discounts at select locations. The final half of the compensation is then paid upon successful delivery.

Drivers can choose which contracts to take, allowing them to control how often they work and how far they drive. This can be especially important for those in the towaway division, if they want to reduce the extra miles on their vehicle. Drivers can usually determine their own route to the location, provided they arrive by the guaranteed delivery date. This allows for a chance to explore the country and see new places.
