Driveaway driving is a great long-haul option for those looking to work in the transportation industry. In this article, we cover what driveaway driving is, and how you can get started with Classic Transport.
What is Driveaway Driving?
Driveaway drivers are responsible for transporting a motorhome or RV from one location to another. To do so, they drive the motorhome itself, rather than using a transport truck. Typically, the RVs are being transported to RV sale yards or to RV rental locations. Often, transportation companies will have contracts with specific manufacturers and will use the same routes. Classic Transport, for example, works with Forest River, East West, and Coachman, with routes beginning in Elkhart, Indiana.
Benefits of Driveaway Driving
Driveaway driving is beneficial for both companies and the drivers themselves.
Companies
For companies, it lowers the transportation costs from the manufacturer to the dealership as a large transport vehicle is unnecessary. It also reduces the transport time as there is no need to wait for an entire load of vehicles, and eliminates the loading and unloading at each end. Finally, driveaway services allow companies to offer better service to their customers. This is due to being able to offer door-to-door delivery anywhere nationwide.
Drivers
Driveaway driving is a great entry-level long-haul position, as a personal truck is not necessary. With a driveaway contract, drivers can choose to tow a small vehicle behind the RV, or use the benefits from Classic Transport to rent a car, fly, or take a bus back to Elkhart, Indiana. Working as a driveaway driver allows you to experience parts of the country you might not have before, while earning a good income.
How Can You Start?
To work with Classic Transport as a driveaway driver, you must meet some basic requirements. You must also have no major violations within the past 7 years and no suspension within the last 3 years. All drivers must have a chauffeur or for-hire licence, as per your home state regulations, and pass a road test. Finally, you must pass a DOT physical and undergo a drug screen during orientation.

What to Expect at Orientation
Once your application is accepted, you must attend an orientation at Classic Transport. Orientation is a day and a half long and will cover everything you need to know about working with Classic Transport. During orientation drivers will finalize retention paperwork, take a drug test, take a road test, have a DOT physical, and attend the Classic Transport CSA and log training class. If drivers have a valid DOT physical, resitting is unnecessary.
What to Expect as a Driveaway Driver
When working for Classic Transport as a driveaway driver, you can expect to deliver Class C motorhomes or utility trucks to a range of locations around the USA and Canada. Most contracts begin in Elkhart, Indiana, however, some may originate from Ladson, South Carolina. Drivers receive 50% of the compensation for each job up front, and the remaining 50% is paid upon contract completion. The idea of this is to help drivers pay for on-road costs during the journey, including gas, food, and hotels when necessary. Drivers do have access to a range of discounts for many hotels throughout the journey, as sleeping in the unit is prohibited. As driveaway contracts are typically a one-way trip, drivers must arrange their own transportation to get back afterwards. Drivers can usually tow a small car weighing less than 3500lbs behind the vehicle or utilize the special rates for travel or rental cars through Classic Transport.
