Stay Organized

Always make sure that you have a travel bag, snack bag packed and a safe driving kit in your truck. Furthermore, make sure that you have a charger for your mobile device and that you have all the necessary electrical equipment, like your GPS system, ready to go. Your safe driving kit should contain gloves, booster cables, a first aid kit, candles, a lighter, blankets, flares, and safety triangles.
Pack Smart
When packing your travel bag, it is important to pack smart, after all, you don’t want to haul around unnecessary items. Make sure to carry at least two days’ worth of clothes, suitable for the current weather conditions, and an extra jacket in case of inclement weather. This is especially important toward the end of summer, heading into fall, as weather becomes unpredictable nationwide. Consider having a snack bag ready to go as well. This should contain non-perishable foods that are preferably high in protein and low in processed sugar. Follow DOT Regulations
As a contractor, you are required to meet and follow all DOT regulations for your truck and yourself. All drivers must hold a valid driver’s licence, be at least 21 years old, have at least 12 months of driving experience, pass a medical and have no active suspensions. Other DOT regulations you must follow as a driver include driving no more than 60 hours over seven consecutive days and taking a 30 minute break within eight hours of driving.

Distracted driving is dangerous driving. Therefore, you should never use your mobile device while driving. Make sure to set up any music playlists, or podcasts before you hit the road. Remember to check in regularly with the dispatch team, especially on a multi-day journey, as they can update ETAs with the client.
